Use PatchOps in Copilot Studio.

Add the PatchOps MCP server to a Copilot Studio agent. Then ask about wells, permits, production and prices in plain language. The agent calls PatchOps and shows the answer with its source.

Get started

Add PatchOps from the tool catalog.

  1. Open your agent's tools

In Copilot Studio, open the agent. Select Tools, then Add a tool.

  2. Pick PatchOps from the catalog

Search for PatchOps under Model Context Protocol. Select it, then Add to agent.

  3. Sign in with your PatchOps account

Copilot Studio opens the PatchOps sign-in page. Sign in or create a free account, then approve access. Each user signs in with their own account.

  4. Test it

Open the Test pane and ask: "What are the latest 5 drilling permits issued in Midland County, Texas?"

If PatchOps is not yet listed in your tenant's catalog, add it as a custom MCP server instead. The section below shows how.

Manual setup

Add PatchOps as a custom MCP server.

MCP server URL

https://patchops.ai/api/mcp
  1. Add a custom MCP server

Open the agent, select Tools, then Add a tool. Select New tool, then Model Context Protocol. The MCP onboarding wizard opens.

  2. Enter the server details

Server name: PatchOps. Server description: Energy data MCP server; finds a data method with patchops_find, then runs it with patchops_query. Server URL: https://patchops.ai/api/mcp.

  3. Choose OAuth 2.0, type Manual

Authentication: OAuth 2.0. Type: Manual. Client ID and Client secret: the values PatchOps issued to your organization. Authorization URL: https://patchops.ai/api/oauth/authorize. Token URL template and Refresh URL: https://patchops.ai/api/oauth/token. Scopes: mcp:read mcp:tools.

  4. Register the callback URL

Select Create. Copilot Studio shows a callback URL. Send it to PatchOps support so we add it to your OAuth client. Sign-in fails until that redirect is registered.

  5. Create the connection and add the tool

Select Next. On Add tool, select Create a new connection, sign in with your PatchOps account, and approve access. Then select Add to agent.

  6. Use it in a chat

Open the Test pane and ask a question. The agent calls patchops_find to pick the right data source, then patchops_query to run it.

Copilot Studio menu names change often. If a menu above does not match, follow Microsoft's current instructions. A custom MCP server needs an OAuth client ID and secret for your organization, and the callback URL registered against it. Contact us for both.

Capabilities

What PatchOps can do in Copilot Studio.

Search and query

Find the right source among public and licensed oil and gas data, then run an exact query. Examples: Texas RRC wells, permits and production, EIA prices, EPA and SEC records.

Maps and charts

Render wells, leases, pipelines and production as a map or a chart from data that PatchOps already returned.

Actions with confirmation

Write actions, such as sending an email through a connected account, are planned first and run only through a separate tool after the user approves the plan.

Licensed sources and your own systems, such as Outlook or a database, work only after you connect them in PatchOps. The agent can use only the tools and data that your PatchOps account and your organization's connections allow.

Limits

Usage allowance.

  • Free accounts get 100 free connector calls every month. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month.
  • Calls from Copilot Studio count toward the same allowance as calls from other AI tools.
  • Teams that need more calls, shared connectors or central billing can use an organization plan.
  • Licensed vendor sources need your own subscription with that vendor.

Troubleshooting

Common fixes.

The agent lists a tool but never calls it

Refresh the tool in Copilot Studio so it loads the current tool list. If it still does not call the tool, remove the PatchOps tool and add it again.

Sign-in fails or loops

Sign out of PatchOps in the same browser and try again. Use the account that has your connectors.

Access denied or session expired

Reconnect the PatchOps connection in Copilot Studio. A revoked or expired PatchOps sign-in needs a new approval. Refresh tokens expire after 30 days.

A source says it is not connected

Connect that source in the PatchOps dashboard first. Then ask again in Copilot Studio.

Usage limit reached

The free allowance resets on the 1st of each month. Choose a plan to continue now.

Write action is blocked

PatchOps runs a write only after the user approves the planned action. Ask again and approve the plan when the agent shows it.
